I have to say that by cutting out beer this week, it was easier to lose a couple of pounds. I actually had 2 people today ask me if I have lost weight!!! Please let that be an encouragement to all as we move into our last 2 months of the competition.

Doin' fine in week 9
Week 9 brings us results that are very encouraging. We are all continuing to lose and getting back on track. The most important result of this week is that the Dead Sexies remain in 1st place. I'm not biased or anything, but Team Oso made a nice effort but fell a little short. The Bird Nerd Herd made a nice bounce back into the game this week with a solid weight loss. Congrats to all. More Than Numbers
Hey everyone! I just wanted to echo some of what Travis said in this week's update, and add some other thoughts.
The biggest thing we need to remember is that what we are trying to do is about more than losing weight. I think we all want to be in better shape, not just thinner. We all want to be here and be healthy to watch our kids grow up and to enjoy each other in good health, especially as we are all going to be in the same place now. Even when this contest is over, we all need to continue exercising and eating well. So, if the last couple of weeks have been rough, that is okay. We can start over any time, and put a bad week behind us.
This week is crazy for me, and I'm having to go to the gym in the evening, instead of in the morning when I usually go. It is hard to convince myself to go, when all I want to do is relax and watch TV. But, once I get to the gym and get moving, I'm so glad to be there. Like Travis, I listen to positive music (Christian rock stuff) and find that the time goes by quickly and I'm in a much better state of mind when I'm done. We are all doing something to take care of ourselves and we should be proud of that. You'll never regret taking the time to do something for yourself, even if it seems inconvenient.
I've found, for me anyway, that regular exercise can offset some bad eating habits. I'm realistic about my discipline regarding food. I'm going to continue to want to eat sweets and drink soda, so I know I have to exercise if I want to do that. I have cut back how much junk I eat, but I still allow myself the treats sometimes, knowing that I'm exercising too. Sometimes I have to take it day by day to not get discouraged or overwhelmed, but it is working.
I want us all to be proud of where we are when this contest ends. But I want us all to be proud of ourselves now too, for making the effort. My self-confidence on a daily basis has gone way up knowing that I'm at least trying to make a positive change.
Maybe each day this week each of us can post something that has been hard to do and something that we have been successful at doing. We need to encourage each other and not get down if we have setbacks. Keep it up!

week 8 results
We have officially finished 8 weeks of competition. We are still down from where we all started but we need to kick it in gear. Time keeps on ticking and all of our results could be better. Let's encourage each other this week to keep moving forward. Please post comments or entries to keep all of us motivated.
One thing that helped me last night was going back to read the first entries. We were all so excited to start and do good at eating right and exercising. It helps to check the blog during the week to see if there are any new posts to help keep us motivated.
Lastly, as busy as our lives are and as stressful and worrisome as work can be (especially in the housing market), I have found that if I start out my morning with exercise, the day does seem to go more smoothly. Getting it done first allows me to check that item off the To-Do list and it doesn't hang over my head. For me, inspirational music or prayer helps me start my day while on the treadmill. We have one chance at the body we have been given...let's take care of them.

Our weigh-in today is a little off in that the Bird Nerd Herd could not weigh in. MS is out of town and not able to be on the same consistent scale. Per their instructions, I am to use last week's numbers.
Once again, the Dead Sexies reign supreme with a whopping 2 lb loss. The number isn't huge but enough to keep us in 1st place. Consistency is the key for all of us.

Well, I for one did not do great this week. I didn't lose, but I didn't gain so I'm OK with that...especially after all the "guy's night out" meals with C-boy and T-boy while the girls were gone. Despite the "shitty" week (as D-crotch from Team Oso puts it) they still managed to have a higher percentage than the Dead Sexies...damn.

Mailbox Motivation
I don't know what all of y'all are doing for exercise, and maybe you don't have the challenges I sometimes do, but I thought I would share what works for me. When I'm on the treadmill and I'm struggling to keep my pace or finish a lap, I give myself small challenges. When running on the sidewalk in the neighborhood, I used to just tell myself to make it to the next mailbox before slowing down. Now on the treadmill, I will tell myself to just go for 30 more seconds. Once I have reached that marker, I tell myself to go another 30 seconds at that pace, and so on until I meet my usual goal. This helps me a lot when I'm feeling like I can't make it another 3 minutes or whatever. I suppose it wouldn't work for an entire hour workout, but I usually find myself wanting to slow down or quit at the same points, and if I can make it through those points then finishing usually comes a little easier.
What is everyone doing on the exercise front? I spend an hour on the treadmill, jogging and walking a total of 4 miles, about 4 times a week. I would love to know what everyone else is doing.

I can't believe we are already done with week 2 and into week 3. We all need to remember that this is a marathon, not a sprint. Dip Recipe
A friend at work was telling me of a good bean dip that's legal and great to dip your raw veggies in. According to the Weight Watcher's plan, it has zero points.
1 can of fat-free refried beans
1 envelope of taco seasoning
Mix the taco seasoning in the refried beans to taste.

Friday Night Dinner
MS and I had our Friday night dinner at Luby's tonight. We each had a bowl of soup. She had vegetable with a corn muffin and I had seafood gumbo with sides of cabbage and green beans. For drinks we indulged with a glass of ice water.
I expect to lose some of my tonnage on our Monday morning weigh-in.

We're Pumped!!
This could really be fun as well as healthy. FS (Father Sweetness) and I are pumped. I've already hit the elliptical in the mornings, I started parking my car far from the door at work, will tackle the stairs at work next week, I'm not eating chocolate :o(
FS and I are also missing our glass of Merlot in the evenings. Maybe we'll just have a glass or two on the weekends. After all, red wine is suppose to be good for you :o)
We're more aware of what we're eating and how much. FS has been walking in the mornings w/dog who needs to lose weight too!
This is a great idea for all of us and we're committed. The toughest thing will of course be eating out at restaurants or at friends/family gatherings, parties....the list goes on!!

The Low Down
Here are the rules...
1. Each couple will weigh in and email me (T-Bone) their total weight every Monday. I will post the totals each week.
2. Each week's weight loss/gain will be tallied and divided into the starting weight for the total % of weight loss. For example...our starting weight on week 1 might be 100 pounds. The next week, we lost 4 pounds total combined. This would give us a total of percentage of weight loss of 4%. The team with the highest percentage of weight loss at the end wins.
3. This program is only for the 3 E's...Exercise, Eat Right, Eat Less...no quick gimmick diets
4. The end of the contest will be determined when D and K move down here.
The winning couple will receive a free night's stay at the Marriott at Solana, dinner, and free overnight baby/dog sitting.
Please understand that we are all here to help each other so please feel free to post success stories as well as trials. We are all here to encourage each other and to get healthy together. We all want to be around to see our new generation of kids grow up.
Please feel free to post recipes or any tips that might help us get through the week.
